If I recall correctly there should be a ball bearing that fits in a hole in the shaft and a groove in the speedo drive gear to stop it spinning. Its been a while since I rebuilt a Lotus 5 speed but my recollection is its the same as the 4 speed in this aspect?

I read this a few hours before testing my refitted 5 speed, that I didn't check this on. Clue a scary minute when it seemed the speed wasn't working. Luckily revving the engine up from idle in 4th while in the air and the speedo kicked into life .
Mental note made for next time I have access.
