TO EASE INSTALLATION OF THE STARTER put a stud on the top bolt hole --then you can hang the motor on the stud and use two hands for the nuts and bolts ----ed

I like that idea - perhaps next time. Why only one stud?
However, it is not far off my advice to start the top screw first before trying to start the lower screw.

I stand to be corrected, but apart from the Brise units, they all appear to be based on Nippondenso units.
I bought my first geared starter from Doc Martin in the USA when the exchange rate was in our favour (http://www.britishstarters.com/), and that was definately a regular Nippondenso production unit CNC machined to accept an adaptor plate designed to suit a number of classic Britsih cars.
The last one I bought from Luke for my brother was, I am reasonably sure, based on a standard Nippondenso unit.
For quality and reliability I would choose Nippondenso every time.

welll when I thought of the idea I only had one spare stud --and it worked ----you could stud both if you are well off enough to have two -edbcmc33 wrote:I like that idea - perhaps next time. Why only one stud?
John,
Your conclusion surprises me - in view of the low cost FI option you took.
The Brise is a nice unit, but not twice as nice as the Nippondenso otions.
Brian
The fuel injection is not cheap,it's cost me more than ?300.00 at the moment but I like the clean lines of the Brise and the axial solenoid...I know nobody sees it but it might make for easier fitting? Less likely to snag on anything??
Do you have photos of the Nippon one in situ?
Thanks
John
P.S. the brise is approx ?240,what does the Nippon end up at?

The Doc Martin one cost me ?128 delivered which included a ?20 C&E VAT charge.
The Luke one cost ?125 + P&P which was for an MGB but I am sure it is the same for an Elan with the adapter plate at a different angle.
Here are the best I could do for photos - plenty of room, but the idea of fitting studs would make fitting a lot easier.

One important difference is the power output. The Nippondenso deliver 1,2HP, but Brise deliver 2KW = 2,75HP. Weight is only about half, 2,5kg.

What interested me most in going for the Denso geared starter was that it turns the engine over at four times the speed of the OE starter with more than double the torque.
I assume the current draw to be about the same, but as the resultant engine start is as ?instant? as modern engines, it is much more kind to the small battery.
