random tach, occasional ignition cut out

PostPost by: Lotus 50 » Wed Oct 18, 2023 6:36 pm

The summer is done and my car should be in storage by early next week. That gives me plenty of time to ponder why my ignition cuts out sometimes, and why my tach reads randomly most of the time.

Over the course of the summer, the ignition cut out problem caused some no starts, but currently it's just a brief bit of no power. The tach has been random all summer, most of the time.

The following parts have been replaced: coil, distributor, points (twice), spark plug leads, tachometer. The anti theft switch in the glove box has been removed.

I suppose I will change the plugs next, before it goes into storage. I may leave the plugs in until spring as the storage oil fog that I use can foul plugs.

What else should I look at in the spring? I suppose it's possible that the new tach has the same problem as the old tach, but what are the odds?

It's likely a bad connection on the coil power supply. So it's be working my way through the devices/connections/wires in that circuit.

I think a few people have experienced issues with the ignition switch...
