wiring modification on plus 2

PostPost by: m1dge » Tue Jan 04, 2022 5:28 pm

I'm looking at the wiring on my 67 plus 2 and there's a previous modification I can't work out.

I've got an orange wire (outside the loom) coming from the red/green cable side of the voltage stabiliser going to a purple wire on the indicator stalk, neither of which I can see on the wiring diagram.

Anyone know what the purple cable on the indicator stalk might be. It's not the horn as it's in addition to the purple/black.

Thanks, Andy

Andy, are you referring to the generator control box or voltage regulator? (Not the 10 volt voltage stabilizer that supplies two of the minor dash gauges). Are you meaning a Brown/Green wire, which would presumably be the main connection to the generator? Are you just seeing the Purple wire at a connector or can you see where it runs on the column?

This is just a guess, but Purple means Hot at All Times, Fused. It may be running to the high / low headlight column switch and be used as as the power supply wire for a flash to pass switch integrated into the stock. For various models of Plus 2 Lotus used the column stock switches from the Triumph Spitfire which had the flash to pass feature. The previous owner may have connected (with an orange wire because the colour does not occur in the Plus 2 loom) to supply power to this switch in order to flash some driving lamps or some such?

I wired my column switch this way. It required modifying the column switch though.

As I say, just a guess.

Stu, I did mean the voltage stabiliser that supplies the gauges. The orange cable runs from here to the purple cable on the indicator stalk.

I think you might be right about it being to do with the flash to pass as I've just found another non standard cable running from another red/green cable on the rev counter to the headlamp relay. The blue/black cable which normally runs to the headlamp flasher relay has been disconnected and replaced with this new feed.

I suspect this is all about bypassing the flash to pass.

Thanks, Andy

I never cease to be amazed at the changes Lotus mad back in the day to the wiring colour convention! Red/Green is generally wiper switch! The voltage stabiliser should only have green wires on it....

More to the point - Blue/Black is [generally - and I do not think Lotus changed this] dip switch to beam. If yours is disconnected, do you have main beam? And why would someone change this for a connection from the rev counter (this is the Red/Green on the stabiliser, yes? Please do not say there is a Red/Green into the rev counter...!) I wonder?

Intriguing :?
