Mechanical Oil Pressure gauge line

PostPost by: EnfoKen » Sat Apr 23, 2011 3:43 am

Hi,

I have an S2 #4888 and was curious about the oil pressure line that runs from the engine block to the gauge.
Was the original line plastic? if so, was it black or white?

Also, is there a source for the S1/S2 battery cover? I believe it's a fiberglass cover.
Thanks
Ken

The originals were black, though, weren't they?

I seem to remember that my old S2 was black plastic.

Original in my S4 was clear plastic that turned cloudy over time. I replaced it with a stainless braided teflon pressure line.

There are inexpensive line kits available in the USA, that include new brass fittings. The copper line is a little more difficult to locate. I shipped some plastic and copper sections to a friend in Norway last year. I think I have about 18 ft of copper left, and a nylon kit in the longer 12 foot length.

I found 1/8" black plastic line from MSC (Manhattan Supply Company) a couple of months ago. Was also looking for 3/16" in black and my old catalog showed it available, but when I tried to order, it was no longer available. Still looking for 3/16" in black. Clear is available.

Rob,

1/8" black is available, but verifying the specs can be troublesome. Most sources indicate they carry air brake line for trucks, and nobody want to say whether or not it can be used for oil pressure gauge lines. I got frustrated trying to track down the info, gave up, and bought the copper. I like the appearance of copper lines better, too.

But, here's a link to the black stuff - a lifetime supply!

Hi,

FWIW, I am relatively certain that mine is "original", bought in 1985, has only 42 K miles [again, relatively certain] & not likely that PO would have changed this, car was not raced or used much & PO seemed not much of a car guy.
Oil gauge line appears to have been clear, although now has a nice brownish patina to contrast with the white paint, both of which I expect to change upon reassembly [I'm not really into Patinas]

Personally, I would change out the plastic line for braided stainless (I did), just for safety. Plastic next to a hot engine, sparks and a car body made of a flammable material seems like trouble waiting to happen. Dan
