Which coil

Which coil should be used on a 74 2s130 as no coil present. Ballest or not?

Graham,

Im not an expert,but I think it doesnt matter.I was adviced to get a Lucas sports coil,around ?20,and a non ressisted type.Gives a better spark.

Am not totally sure here,but surely it depends on wether your wiring has a ballast resistor fitted or not as to which coil you should have...the ballast resistor system gives a bigger spark during cranking...

John,
Having re spoke to my friend, he corrects me by saying a LOW RESISTANCE coil and not a NON RESISTANCE type,Completly my fault,so Graham,appologies if that has caused some confusion.However the performance lucas sports coil is still the recomended choice.As stated the ballast resistor is generally in the cableing,and is a 3 to 4 inch long item.this can be bypassed of course.the pros and cons have been disscused on here before,Id just leave it as is and replace the coil.

Hi Everyone

The original coil on the late Plus 2 is an AC Delco item which has an external ballast resistor, a small circular item about 15mm dia. screwed to the positive coil terminal. If one wishes to do without the ballast resistor, fit a non-ballast resistor type coil and connect both the white and the white/yellow wires to the positive terminal. I've used the non-resistor Lucas sports coil on both my Plus 2S 130/5 and my Europa Special for years and never had any starting problems.

Hi Graham

most of the previous posts have covered the points about coil suggestion. for a non ballasted system the coil standard coil fitted was a Lucas LA12 and this has a primary resistance of around 3.2 to 3.5 ohms when cold. Coils for use with a ballasted system tend to be around 1.5 to 2.0 ohms and the ballast or series resistor is around 1.0 to 1.5 ohms. On starting, engine cranking, this series resistor is temporarily bypassed so compensating for the fall in battery voltage.

some electronics ignitions use very low resistance coils usually less that 1.0 ohm and frequently under 0.5 ohms. These should not be used with points as the coil and points will rapidly burn out. With these coils the electronics limits the current not the coil (or coil plus ballast) resistance.

Graham,
As stated in my posts elsewhere I have now got an electronic system,Aldon dizzy with Aldon ignitor 2 modulr,Flame thrower coil,0.6ohm and some NGK leads.All from Aldon themselfs.Very easy to fit on the whole except the leads,the thicker insulation boots seem to foul on the lower side of the carb mounts,on the no1 cap position.(I just put on a thinner rubber boot from the origonal set). Running either bosche super 4 or the fittted NGK plugs I can assure you the spark is big and bright enougth to been seen from space.

I know you firstly asked what coil,I would still sugest the lucas sports coil,however, if you were to go electronic at some stage, I can recomend what I have,and you can still use your sports coil with it too,so keep it as a spare.
