The gauge end is a slightly odd 1/8 BSP arrangement in which both fittings have planar mating surfaces requiring a washer-like gasket. I have seen different materials used. Moss Motors sells leather washers for this application.

Thanks Marten and Russ.
Now that you mention a leather seal Russ, I seem to recall one of these being fitted when I pulled it apart all those years ago. A friend has donated a flat rubber washer from his Mecedes, pneumatic suspension rebuild kit. I'll see how that goes.
