Ambient Temp Gauge Readings

I have tested a couple of gauges taken out of the car(s).
Both read correct room temp.Placing the bulb in a glass of ice gives a reading of 8oC and 11oC respectively
Is this as accurate as they get?-not much use on a cold morning
If defective I'm thinking a fault in the dial-either a problem with the needle or gearing-possibly a lack of lubrication- rather than a fluid leak from the bulb.
Any opinions?

Could this be nature's response to 'Global Warming'???
Not sure what the answer is to your question, but have found my +2's guage to be pretty spot on, from the -10 last winter to close to 30 in Spring...we won't talk about the so-called-Summer
Compares well to any modern cars I've checked.
Maybe the bulb has to be surrounded by air??
