Shine A (Map) Light On Me

so I installed a stereo today (wooo...) I only want to hook up an iPod, so in case anyone else attempts this in the future, I found the simplest solution was to hang a standard stereo (with MP3-friendly aux socket) as far back as I could in the passenger's footwell where it is completely invisible to passers by and ran a stretchy audio lead though the back of the glove box... lovely!
whilst at it I decided to fix my map light. I opened the spinny lens and a foot long spring lept out at me as well as a (dead) bulb. Holding a new bulb in, it works, but assembling it with bulb then spring then lid has no effect. How is it supposed to work - by twisting?
