Elan S3 gear lever

PostPost by: Simon5350 » Sat Oct 16, 2021 11:01 am

Good morning, Lotus forum

This is my first post here, my usual forum is concerned with pre-war Austin Sevens.

So, forgive if the questions are naive ......

What is the thread on the top end of the stub lever coming out of the gearbox?

I have changed the rubber bush in the gear lever, and have bought a new hollow bolt - which is tight on the thread. It will wind on about half way, and then is tighter than I am happy with.

I cannot see that the gear lever stub thread is damaged, and there are no obvious signs of Loctite.

I think I need to get both a die to run down the gear lever, and a tap for the new nut - in the Austin Seven world, new parts often require fettling before they fit properly,

What tap/die do I need, please?

Other comments welcome. I am being super careful, it isn't my car.

Cheers

Simon

Hi Simon
check to see if it winds on freely without the gear lever fitted. The hollow nut can be a tight fit down the bore of the rubber bush

Welcome to the forum

cheers
