early vs late synchro hubs

PostPost by: dgym » Sat Sep 18, 2021 6:32 am

Hi all, I'm rebuilding my gearbox (again) and have found some damage to my 1st/2nd synchro hub.
It's a 66 car so has the early type gearbox.
I seem to be able to find late version synchro hubs for sale but not early version. Does anyone know if the two are interchangeable? perhaps with a synchro ring swap as well?
cheers!

the rings alone are of different cone angles (by one degree iirc) so not if only for that reason readily interchangeable

thanks nmauduit
so if i get myself a complete new version hub assembly with blocker bars and synchro rings for each side I'll be good?

Edit, completely misunderstood your post!

Due to the change in the size of the mainshaft journals, the ID of the early hubs is different (smaller) than the ID (larger) of the later hubs so they are not interchangeable.

Jim - I found them a few months ago. Let me see if I can find my receipt and correctly identify where I found them and I'll post later today

Found my receipt - sjsportscars - just checked their website and they are still listed. Good luck!

As most damage usually occurs to the outer ring, if iirc the old inner part is compatible with a later outer hub. You can then use original synchro rings and blocker bars. Joe7 will know.

Thanks for catching that, Joe... I read it ad a search for the synchro rings not the hubs... apologies, Jim.

Best bet for those, Jim, is to find an old gearbox to pull them from.

fwiw, I see both kinds offered by Burton for instance (no affiliation), maybe you should search under Ford 2000E gearbox? it seems that the early version is more expensive than the late, at least from that supplier (I'm sure there are others, though would personally never again deal with someone from Crediton on anything about gearboxes)

Jim, what's the damage to the hub? After finding that out maybe we can get you back on the road to recovery! That being the gear box.

If the hub assembly is on Burton's page i must be blind or crazy!

the damage is: absolutely destroyed blocker bars and destroyed out outer hub section. It's unusable.

I would have to dig through my parts but i think I have a 1/2 syncro hub for an early gearbox. My last gear box build with Quaiffe gears was based on an old box and i could not use the 1/2 hub due to the differences with the later style shaft that Quaiffe supply.

cheers
