5 Speed Box or 3:55 diff
miked wrote:Well Mark, nobody can say that you have not tried your best. Very frustrating.
So, are you going to carry on or go for the taller diff and revert to a 4 speed box. Cheers M
Hi Mike,
Going to soldier on with the five speed. The box "works" i.e. it shifts OK, but all that swarf shows something is wearing quickly. So I'll redo (re-check) the Elite box I have, just need to find someone who knows whats right and wrong.
thanks

After dropping the oil I can 101% conclude that there are ZERO 5 speed gearbox experts in the UK, at least not any that worked on this box anyway….
Pictures say 1000 words
I'm quite interested in finding out which claimed expert you would rule out, as I have been considering sending mine for yet an other inspection/overhaul... please PM if deemed preferable.

Mark,
I know this is no consolation, but the error and knock on work is very frustrating. I use to work for a division of ICI and we operated Sulzer centrifuges. These things were expensive, the rotating element cost the same as a new Rolls Royce car. It took 4 men a day to change, and one man a week to overhaul. Our purchasing department thought they could save a few £‘s by changing the spec of one of the bearings slightly. Needless to say Sulzer knew better.
The cost and frustration of the consequences!

Hi Mark, sounds like something was binding all the time causing the low frequency noise, and if the metal particles are brass/bronze then I wonder if one of the selector forks was pushing against a synchro hub? I am accumulating parts to rebuild my 5 speed box myself, I trust my own judgement and it will take me way longer than it would a ‘specialist’ but I’ll stand a good chance of it being OK and functional. End floats and clearances are important, and that may be the issue with the rebuild yours had. So sorry that you have had this experience.
