Clutch issues

PostPost by: potleyu18 » Sat May 23, 2015 4:42 pm

Hi,

just re installing the engine after a rebuild with a new clutch from Sue Miller and both the engine and gearbox rotate freely independently. When refitting the clutch the Pressure plate did match up with the flywheel with a 6-7mm gap between just enough to get the bolts through to tighten it all up. Which from past installations did not seem correct. but all seemed OK. one puzzle was the flywheel dowels did not match up and had to be removed to allow the pressure plate to be connected.

When connecting the engine to the gearbox which was still in the chassis and rotating the crank pulley to align the splines it would only rotate through 1/4 of a turn then stopped. the engine was then removed and re checked both rotating once again. after re insertion the same happened. depressing the clutch makes no difference.

Question is does anyone have any ideas and do you think there is an issue with the clutch or am i making a silly mistake?

I would not install a pressure plate if it does not align with the dowels. These dowels are essential for centering the pressure plate on the crank / flywheel axis. Do you have a photo of the new and old pressure plate

it sounds like the pressure plate is fouling something inside the bell housing if the engine will only go a 1/4 of a turn when installed. This would happen perhaps if you have the wrong pressure plate or if it is off centre
