Drill Quill?

PostPost by: KevJ+2 » Sun Aug 17, 2014 4:07 pm

I've just bought a new speedo angle drive quill from Caterham (?3.00 excellent value!) and although I have searched the archives and found many who have 'removed' the quill, I can't find how they did it. I have barely got enough old quill to grab with pliers so is it possible to drill it out or is this a bad idea?

Salut Kev

Bad idea - but I don't have the answer. Bad idea as the quill is held in with some kind of plastic (in my case, at least). I tried drilling mine out and the plastic came with it - maybe it can be held in with some kind of resin/araldite but as I didn't know how much of the quill should be protruding the part got put into my another-day bin.

Let us know if you find the solution.

What exactly is the drill quill ?

If it's the plastic cog that goes on the end of the speedo cable then it just pulls out after removing a curclip.

At least that's what I remember after changing mine many years ago.

Steve, sorry for any confusion, the heading refers to drilling out the quill from the angled speedo drive. It's the square drive about 2 inches long that commonly breaks. Calling it the angle drive or something else probably would be better than 'quill' but there you go!
Salut Vernon, yes it might go into my another day bin too

Hi,
IF your angle drive is the same, it can easily be dismantled, the back plate is just held by staked in notches, just scrape away these and the rest is self-explanatory, you can then tap the old quill through. Lubricate reassemble in reverse order re-stake in new position.
For what its worth.

Salut Ron

Late advice for me but that sounds do-able. I can confirm they come apart as described. 'Ping' the cap back in with a hammer and small drift.
