Gear lever came off in my hand!

PostPost by: pharriso » Mon Apr 14, 2014 11:55 am

Got the car out of storage having fixed a multitude of issues & adding an alternator, all happy I go for a run in the car... 75 degrees sunny... roof down... could not be better... go to reverse & the gear lever snaps!!

The DPO or restoration shop has eliminated the anti-sizzle bushing & welded the lever to the special sleeve nut.

I have disassembled everything & the "stub lever" aka "Anti-sizzle ball end gear selector" has sheared at the bottom of the threads:

Does anyone have a spare? it's the top part in this picture:

I am stuck until I can find either this part or a complete earlier style gear lever!

Fortunately this happened at the top of my drive, this would have been a whole lot worse if it happened anywhere else..

Also posted in parts needed....

Looking closely at the selector it looks like the threaded shaft is actually separate from the main portion, it's threaded rod screwed in.

I'll have a go with an easy out & see if I can source some threaded bar or even cut down a good quality bolt as a stop gap measure.

Looks like a repair has been done to a previously broken shift lever / selector.

Your new nut is on it's way.

Here's an update.

The threaded shaft has a plain portion below the thread & the shaft is press fit into the rest of the selector assembly.

I drilled out the old shaft from the assembly, helicoiled the hole back to 5/16-24 & then assembled a 2" set screw into the threaded hole

I managed to source a good unmodified anti-sizzle gear lever from Jay @ JAE & he pressed a new bushing in for me

I can't use that lever until Alex's new sleeve nut arrives, in the meantime everything is re-assembled & I'm operational

p.s. the properly assembled gator & plate cuts down a lot on noise.

Thanks for everyone's offer of parts, it's been a little overwhelming! :D
