Reverse light switch type

PostPost by: Wills » Thu Mar 27, 2014 5:46 pm

Hi All,

I am in the final stages of a ground up rebuild of my S4 Elan. The last thing keeping from an MOT is the reverse light switch.

I bought a new switch from Paul Matty. It is a normally closed type (pressing the plunger breaks the circuit). When I think it is correctly set up in the gearbox, the reverse light is on until reverse is selected.

Everything I see on the car and read on these forums suggests it should be a normally open type switch.

I would be very grateful if someone could confirm that I have the wrong type of switch. Or perhaps suggest what I may have done wrong.

Thanks
Wills

The normal function is for depession of the plunger to "make" the circuit and turn the reversing lamp on when reverse is selected.

I don't think you would need a reverse light switch for the MOT ( but correct me if I am wrong..........) It has never worked on my car!

Yes, it is closed circuit when reverse is selected. I also agree with David that reverse lights on a classic car are not required for MOT.
