Gear box Reversing Light switch - Early +2

I have walked away from this problem so many times and now its time to have one last go before reverting to a different solution.

The wiring on the Reverse Light Switch was broken on my car and with the engine and gearbox in situ I have removed the RLS replaced the wiring and reinstalled the switch. I did test the switch on the bench before reinstalling. All very tricky as access is limited.

My problem is that I can't get the setting right. Turned/inserted to little and the switch does not activate and to much the gearbox does not select reverse.

Can any one offer advice as to what I am doing wrong.

Hi Peter,

I assume you are talking about a 4 speed gearbox ?

If you haven't done so already, try this method........

Unscrew the switch fully, engage reverse gear then screw the switch in until the reverse light just comes on. Screw the switch in a further 1/4 turn then tighten the lock nut. Check you can still engage reverse gear OK, if not repeat the process and screw it in a little less after the point where the light comes on.

If this method doesn't work I would check that your switch plunger is not damaged - it should be rounded at the tip so that it runs up the ramp on the end of the reverse gear selector shaft - if it's worn or broken that may be causing it to jam up.

Many thanks, yes its a four speed and you have confirmed that the approach I have been taking is correct. I think it's time to remove the switch and recheck its fully serviceable. There is no reason why it should not be but it's worth rechecking.
