4 speed gearbox noise

PostPost by: rdssdi » Fri Apr 19, 2013 2:36 pm

My 1969 +2 developed a whine from the transmission on deceleration only in all gears. I have removed the engine and transmission and I have disassembled and inspected the transmission.

The only fault I could find was what I believe to be excessive play of the main shaft. It can move in and out around .040 inches. All else appears normal.

Anyone solve a similar problem?

Have you checked the diff, it could be the nut on the pinion bearing coming loose and allowing movement on and off load.
Good luck

It sounded as if it was coming from the transmission. It was driven by me and a mechanic. Same conclusion.

The nut securing the diff flange is secure.

It is possible that the diff is the source of the noise and I and the mechanic are incorrect. Most people I speak with are uncertain as a deceleration noise in all gears is unusual.

Check the diff mountings and tie rod rubbers - if they are loose or worn the diff could be touching the chassis on over-run.
