Is the elan gear box mount common to excorts, cortinas,
and can it even be traced back to the Anglia?

Ceejay,
I believe there are two types, an early and late type. I think the early one was a MK1 cortina/Anglia and the later type a MK1 Escort.
There is a front and rear...have a look at this thread.
