Leaking speedo drive

My speedo drive is leaking, more then a little, at the knurled piece, not where the cable connects, but from the piece that is brass... Do I have to remove the complete assembly or does this knurled piece righted. It seems that the whole assembly wants to turn?

Tell me this is an easy fix because taking it out and etc looks not so easy as it is hard to get to securing bolt and then what. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Drain the gearbox.

Remove 7/16 bolt (9) that secures the forked hold down (6).

Pry lightly on each side (alternating) of the "bearing" (3) with a very small flat blade screwdriver.

Out she comes!

Can't see how the speedo drive can leak - it's full (or should be) of grease. There's a screw you can undo to refill it. Unscrew the knurled nut and the whole thing will come out. It could be easier to unscrew the speedo cable first - gives a bit more room.

I'm not at home but I think the speedo drive adapter has a seal - I would think that's the first place to look. As you said there's a fiddly nut to undo that presses a fork to hold the adapter in place. Relatively easy to undo and take out; a little longer to put back because your fingers get in the way of what you want to see so you have to re-find the thread by touch.

I'm assuming you're talking about a 4-speed 'box - I've heard the 5-speed is practically inaccessible.

Check you have gasket number 4 in place.

Did you add gearbox oil through the gear leaver opening recently? I had the problem a while back. See threads on topic

Thanks you guys are always a great help. The exploded view is great. I will be able to figure this out. Another question. Does the speedo cable usually run above or below the gearbox? Mine is below and is very close to the exhaust header.
