half shaft conversion length

PostPost by: zeteclotus » Tue Jul 31, 2012 3:59 pm

Hi, I made some TT style conversion shafts for another +2 I had but can not find the drawing I made.

Does anyone have the min max length dimensions of either the CV type or TT hardyspicer type.

hopefully someone has either a pair off a car or maybe has a drawing?

I remember the PCD of the output shafts is 95.8mm.

I have decided I am not prepared to pay ?90 each and spend a day changing rotoflex couplings every 6-12 months.

Also I want to make my own shafts so i can leave the fail safe pegs on the car rather than cutting them off.

Thanks in advance.

Salut Paul

I probably won't be the last to ask, but I am the first - would you consider making an extra pair to sell (to me) ?

A search will give you this and doubtless others.

Paul

Are you planning to shorten some driveshafts (by friction welding? by welding / sleeving?) or getting some custom ones made. I would be interested in joining in on this - I could get mounting plates made in bulk etc..

Let me know if you are interested....

I bought individual bits welded them together and had them balanced like you would for a custom prop shaft.
last time I used standard hardy spicer flange joints weld yolks and a sliding joint. +2 adapter plates I made out of 8mm plate, all worked well I just wish I had kept the drawings.

The engine output was at least 145BHP I did replace the diff output shafts with some later type ones.

Hi Richard yes I would consider making a small batch alone or with someone, only thing is for a one of i will probably go the hardy spicer joint route but for a bigger batch I think CV joints are better

The ebay ones are what I started with, but felt two ends the same would be better,so ground out the weld, sourced some splined bar and fitted centralising springs in each end...have a couple of spare H/S joints mounted on ali adapter plates in the shed so should either end loose a U/J it's a twenty minute job to replace...

Hi John
What's the story with the crenelated rear brake disk shown in your photo?

To answer my original question

393mm from hub 3 way mount to diff 3 way mount at maximum drop for a late car with failsafe shafts.

Finally finished making them and fitting them, got the new MOT yesterday.

As I recalled ok for a one off make but too much finishing work is needed on some of hardy spicer forgings to stop interference at maximum droop and all the bolts are custom thread lengths etc.

I manage to make the shafts so the failsafe pins are retained.

Has one else noticed losing the rotoflex coupling makes the car feel faster! especially noticeable from 0-30. I wonder what the power loss is of rotoflex couplings.

The car is quieter so I managed to make them more balanced than the original shafts.

on the down side the exhaust smell is back.....
