SORN and registration info needed

PostPost by: types26/36 » Mon May 16, 2011 4:02 pm

Some help needed here as I don't understand the rules about SORN, can anyone explain the position when a car that has not been taxed since 2002 is bought? the guy has never received any notifications or demands but he has a VC5 document although it was never SORNED.
If I were to buy the car would I have any problems with registration or any other problems?

I doubt if there is a problem.

To be sure, it makes most sense to just phone the DVLC.

The car is pre SORN and therefore does not need to be registered as such. The DVLA record is probably 'dormant' but will resurrect with a change of keeper. You won't need to declare SORN until the car is next MOT'd and you want to lay it up in the future.

Hi

I had the same thing with a Mini I bought last year; it was not SORN and I did not have a log book with the car. I applied for the Log book and got a letter back from the DVLA saying I may be liable as it is not SORN. As yet I have not heard back from them.

I don't pretend to understand the rules but the DirectGov website says only vehicles which were last taxed before 31 Jan 1998 are exempt, this one was taxed in 2002........

Brian, you just need to find a nice S1 now and you'll have the box-set. May need a bigger stable though :D

If they do, don't pay it & refer them to the previous owner for payment. In my Opinion.
Provided that you re-register or SORN it as soon as possible after buying it you have done nothing wrong.

You are quite right as I spoke to the DVLA and I am not responsible for anything previous to the date when I bought :D
