Lotus Elan

5 speed bell housing

PostPost by: ianthomson72 » Tue Apr 12, 2011 2:54 pm

Hi,
I recently saw an ad on E bay for a lotus 4 speed bell housing that had been re drilled to take a type 9 5 speed box .
Does anyone know if this works? as I haven't seen this referred to on any of the threads on the subject

Cheers

Hi Vernon,

No I didn't note details of the link. The seller said that he did not do the work so had no info on it. This put me off bidding but it did get me wondering if this was a practical proposition. I don't have a type 9 box for comparison but it should be possible to turn down the release bearing guide flange to fit the hole in the 4 speed bellhousing which would maintain the centre , fit the flange to the box, offer up the box to the bellhousing, mark the bellhousing for new holes and drill. Does this sound too easy ? am I missing something ?
Any comments would be welcome

Regards

Ian

Looks like a pretty simple conversion and keeping the standard bell housing will certainly be easier than the route I took (a LHD sierra bell housing + home engineered concentric slave cyclinder) the engine mounts on page 10 also look a good upgrade for the +2.
