Clutch pedal on the floor

PostPost by: stuartgb100 » Fri Aug 20, 2010 4:06 pm

Hi,

Took the Sprint down to London yesterday, with no apparent problems.
Returned to the car after an hour or so, and no Clutch !
Pedal straight to the floor.

No sign of any leak, and fortunately I was able to pump up the clutch
prior to each gearchange.

Back home I checked, and the master cylinder is full.

Where to start, please?

Regards,
Stuart.

Sounds like a master cylinder rebuild required.

I'm with John, although both those are possibilities. I think you will find a master cyl rebuild kit / overhaul will fix the issue anyway.

As Gray says also..Make sure the piping is not too close to the exhaust. And use a silicone fluid. ;-))

Its an easy fix Stuart..

Stuart..meant to say ...When buying (IF?) a service kit, keep away from the Ebay sh1t. Buy from a reputable supplier as there is a fair load of tosh out there. I bought a kit from Ebay. The post/advert showed a Girling box and was listed as such. It was from either India or China. Complete rubbish and went straight in the bin.

Careful mate....

my slave cylinder leaks too ---I just carry some brake fluid and top it up when I'm about to lose clutch--- it self bleeds --too much more to worry about - -ed

Thanks for the replies.

A change of fluid made no improvement, so I removed the MC.

The piston in the cylinder moves nice and freely, but something
is stopping it from coming out (and yes, the circlip, dished
washer and push rod have been removed).

Will look at it again in the morning.

Regards,
Stuart.

Hi. A tiny bit of dirt on the O ring that stops the fluid going back into the reservoir when you press the pedal stopped my clutch master cylinder from working - pedal went straight to the floor. I fixed it by removing the master cylinder, stripping it, cleaning it and putting it back together. It's been fine since. My seals were'nt worn - the dirt got in there while the car wasn't in use.

Fair comment, But..Depending on how old etc,Its not a bad idea to fit a new set of seals when you have it apart.. I certainly would. Dont use the Indian 'Girling' ones though!!

They are sh1t and sometimes just do not work well at all..

Going to ask me how I know? Yep.. your right!! It lasted all of a week before I took the master cyl off again and fitted a proper kit. Sorted...

Have fun girls n boys..

Well, master cyl is rebuilt and refixed (saw no obvious problems)
and symptoms are as before.
So I'll tackle the slave next.
Guess there's nowhere else to go.

Stuart.

You're going to love rebuilding the slave cylinder (maybe you've done it before!) and you might consider a full replacement - not a lot more expensive than a rebuild kit.
Another option you might consider is to install a remote slave cylinder bleed nipple. Instead of installing the nipple on the slave, you can install a banjo union and run a s/s braided hydraulic line up to an accessible location in the engine bay and install the bleed nipple at the end of the line. Makes bleeding the slave cylinder almost civilised.
