Gear lever parts

PostPost by: tricks » Sat Aug 07, 2010 1:34 pm

I have managed to snap off my gear lever! I think the root cause is the ths clutch slave cylinder is leaking so preventing me from getting gears when the engine is running and in panic at a busy junction trying to get it into gear a bit too much force was applied! But it seams that I didn't have an original gear lever and was something a pervious owner must have fitted.
Anyway This means I need a whole gear leaver bushes etc some of which are not availible. I have attached an image of the gear lever, I can get the lever bush and bolt (67, 63 & 66) but was wondering if anyone tell me if the washers 64, 65 are anything special or I can just look for a couple of suitable washers to pack the bolt out.

Thanks

Mark

Tricks
any old washers will suffice, just remember not to bridge the rubber gap as that's there to suppress vibrations..

Hi Mark,
The diagram you have is not correct. There are just two identical washers, one either side of the bush and an open ended tube nut. PM me if you need dimensions or pics.

Best regards,

Any competent workshop should be able to weld your old gear lever together, if necessary adding a bit of tube over the join to strengthen it.

Mark,

According to the Elan Master Service Parts List (the apparent source of your figure), reference number 64 is a "lock washer" part number W0072, and reference number 65 is a "lock nut" part number A036 F 0154 (W024). The book calls for 2 of each (1 set above and 1 below the bush).

Why aren't those parts salvageable from your old lever?

None of the parts are salvagable as they were not there! The gear lever fitted is nothing like those in the diagrams, it was an oblong block with two holes, one going over the shaft coming up from the gear box with a split pin through the shaft, the other threaded for the gear lever, the lever itself was just a straight bar with a thread on each end (sorry can't take pictures as I'm at work). I'm guessing at some point in the cars history, a previous owner maybe used a ford part on it instead of the correct one. I only saw three cars in my search for an elan, so didn't notice the descrepancy which now I have the two levers side by side shows that the broken one is far straighter than the correct lever.

Looks like there was a change at some time........on my S4 the bush is longer than the thread on the stub lever so not room for a nut above and below the bush, maybe earlier cars had a longer stub lever or a shorter bush ? The workshop manual shows the later set-up with just the two thick fitted washers and a long tube nut. The attached pic shows the stub lever with the lower washer fitted, the bush sits directly on this washer with an identical washer on top, the tube nut passes through the top washer and into the bush.

Here you go guys, back from work and taken a photo of the old gear lever next to the new one. Think you can now see what I had fitted was not original. The oblong block was bolted onto the thread coming up through the console and the straight leaver was screwed into this block. So I'm presuming a past owner used parts from another car rather than an original lever.

Thanks for the details on the other parts I will hopefully get the car back on the road soon when I get the lock bolt and replaced the clutch slave cylinder.

Mark,
What you have there is some bits from a +2. Here is a photo of my (+2), sorry about the poor photo but I did not want to take the console off but I think you can see the bits OK. I've no doubt someone else will be along with a better photo.

The Elan gear lever you have goes straight on to the thread coming out of the gear box. You do not need the rectangular bit. Yes there could well be some washers missing.

Cheers
John
