Gearbox rebuild-2 small questions

PostPost by: martinbrowning » Mon May 03, 2010 4:17 pm

Hi folks,

Just completed a strip down and rebuild of the 4 speed box from my S130. I have replaced with new parts all bearings, oil seals, both synchro assemblies, layshaft, thrust washers and gaskets. Two questions are:

One of the detent springs that sits under the top cover plate and presses down on the ball bearing is shorter than the other two;does the short one sit above the reverse selector shaft or doesn't it matter?

Operating the box on the bench, first, second and reverse engage with the lightest of touches. (little more than a finger push) but third and fourth need a hefty push. Am I expecting too much from the box whilst it is on the bench, given that all parts are new and will it free up with use once back in the car?

Regards

Springs should be the same but if you use it for rev it would keep the forward rail balls the same as for the gear change is the stiffness in the gears or the change rods you can take the bolt out of the fork to try .
My sprint had metal discs on springs not seen before but refitted them on rebuild
