Which end does the doughnut go?

PostPost by: Baggy2 » Sat Apr 10, 2010 11:38 pm

I am re-commissioning my +2 which has been off the road too long. A while ago on ebay I 'won' a pair of drive shafts of the type with a UJ at one end and the doughnut at the other - I am a subscriber to the view that to leave some rubber in the drive chain provides a degree of cushioning so I was pleased with my puchase. I have always assumed that the uj went inboard and the rubber outboard but it occured to me the other day that might not be the case and they would fit either way round. A quick google around to try and find a picture failed so I would appreciate some advice from the forum. Thanks

Inboard Baggy as I understand them. Have a look for photos on the Spyder web site.

Doughnut goes next to diff.

Pic of Spyder Mk1 setup attached, which what I suspect you have. Note the missing bolt; it still passed the MOT with both doughnuts and both rear springs broken.

I'd rather use a sensible MOT service.

I ask mine to tell me of ANYthing he saw that he thinks might need fixing soon.

Split doughnuts can be quite hard to spot though.

Me too. It was not that hard to spot as they were both split and one had a bolt missing and both rear springs were broken. I had the MOT done in London as I tend to take my cars to where-ever I am working at the time, sadly this one was not very good. I picked it up after work and drove it home (about 40 miles) and noticed it was not quite right; very lucky really if they had let go it could have been a lot worse. Now swapped for CV shafts.

Not all MOT testers are created equal.

You are not wrong there Jason..

The Sprint I bought had 10 months mot remaining when I bought it. I suspect the car was never inspected at all.

Here's the list of faults on the car when I collected it.

Rear brakes completely inop.. All rubber couplings goosed.(They fell apart when stripped) Fuel pipe in three sections with rubber joints and jubbley clips. All leaking. Exhaust system goosed. both track rod ends u/s. Wheel bearings VERY loose.Steering rack worn & Gaiters leaking. Rusty brake pipes. Nylock nut MISSING from stub axle..!!!!! both top ball joints and trunnions goosed on each side. Front wishbones nearly rusted through. Front shocks well worn and rusted damper rods. Horn u/s. Headlamps u/s
washers u/s. Fuel gauge u/s ( the guy had ran the car for years like this and had a dipstick marked off in gallons in the boot!!)

The list was endless and I nearly showed the car to the mot inspectors but didn't.... :?

The jocker who signed the MOT had listed an advisory .. ''Slight wear in top steering column bush''.. Hilarious..

I still have the advert for the car in C/L mag description needless to say did not match the cars deplorable condition. Sad thing was the (doctor) guy who owned it did not have a clue the car was not in good nick. He was being taken to the cleaners. I have a short note to him from the garage ''looking after'' the car for him and issuing him MOT's over the phone, saying how difficult it would be to fix the fuel gauge due to age of car, difficulty obtaining parts etc etc.. The fuel gauge sender float was leaking and was full of fuel & hence no longer 'floating'... Laughable..

Anyone beat that for a faults list ??
