Is this the going rate for a BL based 5 speed lotus gearbox ?

Ok it's an eclat/elite box but a short bit of spannering will get that into an elan if you already have a broken BL based 5 speed lotus box.

Hell you could buy a complete Eclat for that but if you look at the biddind it is all bidder 1 bid 4 times i am sure that has not sold

I'd suspect you could get the whole Austin Maxi for this money - and from the info on other threads it looks like there are still some roadworthy ones about! C

The last one on eBay sold for ?50.

It's useless for an Elan unless you can source the correct tailshaft housing.

I paid ?50 - ?75 each for two Elite 5 speed boxes off ebay.
Both in working order.

Expect to pay ?750+ for a good condition ready to fit Elan
5 speed version.

The Elite box is a good source for spare "internals".

The Elan 5 speed is significantly improved after fitting a
"quickshift" gearlever.

Stuart, can you explain what a 'quickshift' lever is please? Better still, do you have any photos? I assume it involves the removal of the squadgy rubber bit that makes it feel so vague...

Not a very scientific explanation I'm afraid but basically it's a modified
gearlever that significantly reduces gearlever travel when engaging gears.

I don't think I took a photo, but I may have one somewhere. I'll look
tonight. Otherwise, I could remove the gearlever at the weekend and
post a photo then.

OTOH, you're not that far away (Norfolk-Suffolk).

I must admit that I had toyed with the idea of getting some made up
if there was a market. It really does give a superb improvement to
the 5 speed gearchange.

A quickshift moves the pivot point of the gearstick thus making the throw of the stick shorter.

In other cars it makes them more "notchy" but in the case of the pudding stirrer BL 5 Speed Lotus box that would be a good thing !

I was asking about these boxes as i recently bought an aledged reconditioned one off ebay.
I am planning on fitting this into my Anglia Estate (i know, boo hiss ) but the thing really needs another gear for those long runs to shows.

I need to figure out gearbox mounts, make an adaptor to fit the box on an anglia bellhousing, get a prop made up and figure out what to do with the clutch.

So i have a few questions, if anybody can help me ?

What gearbox mount does the elite box use ? It's got to be something off another car !

What clutch would i need to use the elite box bolted up to a xflow ?

If anybody could help me with those i would be grateful.

Craig, assuming you have a 'standard' Anglia engine, if you got hold of a 5-speed from an Elan+2 it should bolt straight on. The only differences to an Elite one are the bellhousing (to match the 105E engine block on the Twin Cam) & tail assembly (moves the lever closer to the engine). Then you could use a 5-speed +2 clutch too. 'Easy'...
The rubber mounting is the same as the 4-speed Elan & +2 gearbox - Anglia??

Not Anglia, it will be Mk1 Cortina Mounting on the anglia box is different, flat as opposed to the pointy cortina/elan type.

I'm in the process of modifying a 5 speed gear lever to make it 1" further forward in a similar manner to that divised by Victor Hollnagel.
