Play in gearbox shaft

With the ongoing and complete restoration of my sprint (which it is believed has covered just 24,000 miles from new) the gearbox is the one item which I have left entirely alone but do intend to replace the two oil seals.

Having dragged this out from under the bench and looking it over - I noticed there is quite a lot of side to side play in the shaft at both ends

My question - is that normal?

Merry Christmas to you.

There would be significant play in the front input shaft as the spigot bearing supports the shaft once it is in the car, as for the rear output shaft this should have less play but it will have some............there is a white metal sleeve/bearing in the rear gearbox housing that supports the output shaft in my experience they do not usually wear out so I would be surprised if yours is worn.

How much play do you have??

The rear sleeve supports the propeller shaft yoke not the output shaft itself so the rear output shaft flexs significantly without the yoke installed also.

Thanks for replies - movement in shaft might be 1 or 2 mm and did figure that once mated to their positions this play would probably not be a factor - the prospect of having to later remove the gearbox (for not checking) is not one of choice!
