Clutch

PostPost by: jdb » Thu May 26, 2005 4:49 pm

hi,i know this might sound daft--but can anyone tell me how the clips/d-ring/bearing carrier go together?--when i took mine apart the fork was welded to the bearing carrier with no clips or d-ring
now ive got all the bits together -not sure how they all fit?
plus ive noticed the bearing carrier on the old/welded one is a lot heavier with a larger diameter part for the bearing to go on--the bearing from that one is to large to fit the new carrier--which would be the right carrier? the replacement came of a elan--but not sure which mk
thanks john

Do you have the clutch pressure plate with the insert in or just "fingers"

the clutch/flywheel is off a x-flow i presume as its a 7 1/2"(20 spline) and its got fingers--although the one that came out had culy ones and the one ive got hold to relace it has straight without the curled bit at the end----if that makes sense?

Are the ends of the clutch fingers 'exposed' or are they covered with a large disc? The disc, I believe is called a platen.

The assembly of the throwout bearing on the fork is impossible to explain and is best learned from a picture and the shop manual covers it best.

If the pressure plate does NOT have the "plate" on the fingers then a release bearing with a slightly rounded face should be used (as per 5 speed box)
If the pressure plate has the "plate" then a flat faced release bearing is used.
I once did a conversion using a Xflow flywheel and clutch, I had to make up a sleeve to fit inside the Xflow release bearing as the internal diameter was larger then the Lotus unit.
As its a long time ago I cant remember the exact details but you should be able to work it out.
As Greg says it would be very difficult to explain the arrangement of the springs etc. If you do not have access to a parts or w/shop manual let me know of a fax number and I will send a pic.

thanks for replys
both old & new plates have"nt got the middle plate
the bearing carrier that was welded to the fork is a lot heavier been a thicker dia were the bearing sits on---the new carrier wont fit the old bearing as the holes to big---which is the right carrier---& the old bearing has a flat face
when i find a fax to use i will post number---thanks
