S4 gear box

I am having problems getting into 1st and then into 2nd ,but not all the time .It also happens without the engine running.The gear change through the gears is "notchy".I had a new clutch last year about 5k miles ago

When was the box last rebuilt? Could be the synchro rings on their way out :(
