Just to add to the intrigue the Escort RS1600 is listed as P/N 3026E 7505A!
From what I can gather the RS1600 ran a pre-engaged starter with different ring gear which may explain the internal relieving.

Cheers for the part numbers. I too thought the pre-engaged starter might be an issue on these bellhousings but the ring gear appears to be almost identical on size as a inertia ring gear and isn't close enough to foul.

Getting back to a previous post - the 120e bellhousings are ribbed so some sellers try to sell them as fitting Lotus Twincam. As I've shown, they don't!

Do you have a part number for the ring gear fitted to the RS1600? There is another pre-engaged ring gear fitted to later Ford's that is bigger diameter than the one in my photo - that could be responsible for bellhousings needing to be machined.
