I'd have put a small wager it was steel...and lost!

This site (http://www.fordanglia105eownersclub.co. ... -a-change/) includes:

"The 2000E wheel is made from very brittle plastic and is rare to come across one that has all its teeth. If you are lucky enough to find one intact, then great. If not remove the steel one from the 1200 shaft by knocking back the tab washer and undoing the large nut. Before sliding it off, cup your hand underneath as there is a tiny ball bearing under it that acts as a woodruff key"

Worth bearing in mind.

Mine is steel - you can just about make it out on this pic

Maybe the plastic version was phased out due to breakage problems and Ford reverted to steel?

I thought the drive gear in my '67 S3 was originally steel...but all the internals were replaced with new in '77 and the old stuff was disposed of... :(

Just had the gearbox on my 71 Sprint overhauled and mine was definitely green plastic.

Replaced the angle drive on Caterham 7 but speedo still not working. Bought final drive gear but cannot figure out how to get the old part out. How easy is it to remove the large plug opposite angle drive as I figure that is the only way to remove the drive gear.

Are you talking about the alloy piece (#3) that carries the drive gear as shown in this thread:
lotus-gearbox-f37/how-remove-speedo-drive-gear-t22927.html
or are you talking about a plug on the other side of the gearbox opposite the speedo drive which is what I am understanding.
If it is a plug on the other side I'm not sure the Elan 2000E box has that plug.
From memory the single rail gearbox has that plug and the Elan has the three rail gearbox, has your Caterham a single or three rail box?
Here are some pics of the single rail g/box showing where the plug is located, if it is this plug as far as I remember the plug is just prised out as it has a lip around the edge.

Yes you are correct, for the Type 9 gearbox just carefully lever out the blanking plug on the opposite side of the mainshaft housing and the gear will come out.Should be the same IIRC if you have a Caterham 6 speeder. Good time to replace the oil seal too.

I was just looking through my copy of the Elan Master Parts List for S1, S2 and Coupe showing item PH23, the right angle gearbox. This part is identified as BG2402/03. I believe this is a Smiths part number. The only other application identified for this part is a Morgan 4/4 series III.

A list of various right angle gearboxes with applications can be found here:

A similar list can be found here:
