Gearbox swop?

Alex,
I'm reasonably certain that my setup uses the original slave cylinder (?) - need to check.

I will post a picture of the quickshift lever later today.

I've always believed (listening to the informed) that fully synthetic fluid in a road car was an absolute no-no.

Alex i have the std slave cylinder & exhaust the other part you need is the spigot bearing carrier that fits into the flywheel as the gearbox input shaft is too short to reach the crank although on Ken Myers advice i ditched this and machined an oilite bearing to fit in the flywheel as the 5 speed spigot bearing is a poor fit & rests on the rubber "o" ring in the bearing & not the needle rollers

Alex,

A quick look suggests my poor old memory was not wrong this time.
Seems I used the old slave cylinder and slightly modified the pipework.

Definitely use "normal" brake/clutch fluid.

Quickshift lever was aquired from a good source, so no idea if it's an
altered 5 speed gearlever, or made from something else. But I can find out
if needed.

Excellent guys... Spot on info. getting there with the decision. Awaiting Graham Boulton return from holiday to talk with him..

Aussie John and I were just discussing the spigot issue. Oilite or phosphor bronze? I would have thought the correct part should have been up to the job though..

To late with not using synth brake fluid. Been in the car for a while now with no issues so far. Why not to use?

Two reasons. Perhaps neither applies to your situation; you can judge for yourself.
1. Silicone brake fluid (DOT5) compresses more than DOT3, 4, or 5A especially at high temperatures. (Ref: Fred Puhn's "Brake Handbook" and Carroll Smith's "Engineer to Win") It can also exhibit high frequency vibration frothing. (Ref: Carroll Smith's "Engineer to Win")
2. Although it won't absorb moisture, the moisture can get into the system the same way and then condenses into water drops and pools at the lowest point(s) in the system potentially causing local corrosion.
The Bosch Automotive Handbook states,"Because silicone fluids - like mineral oils - do not absorb moisture, they formerly saw occasional use as brake fluids. The disadvantages of these products include palpably higher compressibility and inferior lubrication, which reduce their suitability for use as hydraulic fluid in many systems.
A critical factor with brake fluids based on silicone or mimeral oils is the absorption of free water in a fluid state, as the water forms vapor bubbles when it heats up to more than 100?C and freezes when it cools to less than 0?C."

It's also more expensive than conventional fluid so why not just change the DOT3 or 4 every two years as recommended? :wink:

I've taken the advice and use DOT5.1 which is effectively DOT4 with the higher temperature capability.

Stuart,

I see what you mean regarding the increased leveredge. Apart from the metal lump at the lower end, the other parts looks like the standard lever.

Not quite what the makers suggest, but... I only use it in the clutch! So far perfect. like all my bikes and cars, changed annually with rest of fluids.

Hi again Guys..

Sorry.. away on business for a couple of days.

Took the Sprint in for Mot check today and everything ticketyboo.... :wink: Great day here but very cold and driving along hood down was freezing.....but boy was it great! Just wonderful. I have to report I am struggling to come up with motivation to start and take the car apart again. Real struggle this. It is driving so well. Quick prod on the gas and its up to 70 in a flash. :) :roll:

I am thinking continuing with the parts acquisition and then............... ?

If there had been any issues to take care of at same time that would help justify the take down again but all I have to do at the moment is replace the sump & I can do that without a big strip down as I have the removable chassis x member section..

Then there is the cost of fixing my bonnet next month. AArrgh!! I am struggling with this...

I am still waiting to talk to Graham Boulton which will be the decider.So it will depend on what he tells me. He is back from hol's soon...

Keep you's posted as normal.

One other quick question guys.. Is the std slave cyl the same for both boxes? Or do I need also to get another slave?

I have a Saab CSC that does the job and it looks nothing like the one Jim shows.
That's not to say that the one Jim shows won't do the job equally as well.
When choosing one make sure the release bearing fits the 5 speed diaphragm correctly.
