Clutch not disengaging

PostPost by: alfadave » Fri Dec 30, 2022 10:37 am

Got the engine out.

Both curly clips and the D clip were floating loose.

No oil from the crank rear oil seal.

But very wet with oil in the bellhousing ( 4 speed).

Any thoughts on best course of action?

Any tell-tale marks on the bellhousing or block where the oil was from?

Took the clutch off.
Rear of block, clutch plate all dry.

Circular line of oil all round inside of bellhousing.

Maybe front gearbox oil seal?

Steve at SJ says there are 3 types for the 2000E gearbox!

I'd suggest you run your finger through that oil, rub it between two fingers and have a good sniff. You can then usually identify through both colour and smell whether it's engine or transmission oil.

The Dave Bean manual gives a detail write up on the gearboxes and their differences including the 3 different seals and how to identify which you probably have.

cheers

Alfa Dave,

Further to twin cams observation, my wife always knows when I have drained gear oil, she says it smells like cats wee!

Just getting over a cold, and my sense of smell has gone!

But odds on its gear oil.....just need to take the existing oil seal out and order a matching replacement

You might check to see if the left lower bolt, looking from the front, that goes through the bell housing into the gear box is leaking. Might be you lucky day!

Sense of smell coming back.......yes its gear oil.

Seems the oil is leaking from the front seal and being thrown round the bellhousing.

Front seal carrier came off easily......the oil seal seemed ancient and came out in bits.

SJ give the sizes of the 3 different seals, so I was able to order the correct one, plus a gasket.

And I sealed the lower UK drivers side bolt whilst in there

Looking closely at the input shaft on my 4 speed gearbox....

The shaft tapers up from 22 to 27mm at the point the oil seal sits in the sleeve.

The sleeve suits a seal of 41mm outside diam.

SJ have two items

SJ 026 F0002 41x27x9 mm

SJ 036 F0009 41x22x 8 mm

I think I need the former but not sure.

The old seal was ancient and brittle, and came out in bits. But it seemed like the former.

All back together now, and clutch operating fine.
Fairly straightforward DIY job.

I have lifting beam and chain block. Just removed the engine, not gearbox.

Just a bit time consuming, but glad I've done it.
