The clutch and thrust bearing and carrier need sorting for sure to use the correct matching set of components as they are different with a thrust platen on the clutch or without and your current ones are mismatched
The disc also needs checking as the lining material may be to thick at least for the clutch plate your currently using (which may be an incorrect one)
cheers

friedy wrote:I can see what you mean about my clutch cover, definitely doesn't look correct. I will take it off tomorrow and also take a pic of the friction plate incase that's not correct either. The old friction plate wasnt to rivets it was getting contaminated with oil. Thanks for you help it's appreciated.
I will check tomorrow whether I've got some clutch discs and check them on a flywheel with a cover to see how the fingers sit. Hopefully I'll have got two different thickness ones to show the difference it makes to the fingers.
I will also check with a clutch cover with the pad to see how the fingers sit, just to be sure I'm not leading you down the wrong path with the lay of the fingers (fingers should be the same whether it's got a pad or not).

My used friction disc is 8mm thick, so new at 8.5 seems fine.
In your photo showing the measurement, I can see what looks like a protruding central boss. Is that a centralising tool, or part of the disc?
The disc should be marked “flywheel side” on one face. Have you got it the right way round?

I'd suggest you use one of these adapters together with the correct round nose bearing.
That's a new clutch plate by the way. Nobody relines clutch plates these days.

Hi Lotusian, the protruding boss is part of the disc. And definitely had it correct way round, flywheel side is the side with the boss.
2cams, this was the disc that came out and relined by sue Millar, she doesn't do new only refurbed.
If 8.5mm is correct, it must be the cover that is wrong, the fingers don't look like any I've seen from either the 4 or 5 speeds.

I agree with Lotusian. I have never seen a disc with a protruding boss as shown in your Photo2! There should not be a protruding boss on the flywheeel side.
Something is wrong with that disc or the way it is being fitted!
Alan.

I think you have to wrong driven plare, that boss showing in your mesurement image does not look correct to me.
A better image of the driven plate flywheel side would help.
you seem to have a mismatch of clutch parts as others have pointed out.
I have just have a refurbished clutch pressure plate and driven plate from Sue Miller, they were sent to me first and I returned used clutch later. good service. if you sent the parts for refurbishment first I dont think you would get your actual part back, so you could get a wrong part by mistake.

I'll give it try. Looking at the pic of the disc, I think its installed incorrectly. The boss, if placed in as shown, looks like it can hit the flywheel. The boss should fit inside the pressure plate. If you offer up the disc to the flywheel does the boss touch the flywheel before the disc material contacts the face of the flywheel?

This is definitely the friction plate I sent to Sue, as I said to her I was in no hurry and it took about a week. Here's the boss on the flywheel side and it does fit in the flywheel without interference.

@friedy - the first picture you posted this morning shows the boss pointing away from the flywheel, which I think would be correct. Is this picture indicative of how it came apart, or just put back together for picture purposes?
A picture of an earlier (and smaller) setup from my Seven, but think this shows the correct friction-plate orientation:
Also see this link, similar issue to yours and a picture of the installed unit...

@senc the first picture was just for picture purposes. To be totally honest I can only assume it came apart with the flywheel marked side to the flywheel, my son unbolted the cover and the disc fell out.
Something I will do tomorrow just out of interest, is rebolt the cover without friction plate and measure the gap.
Looking at all the comments and old posts I think my best option is to buy new cover and friction plate from one source as, hopefully, I don't won't to have to pull the engine again.
