Thanks for the detailed reply Rohan. Kind of confirms my thinking.
Later Renault UN-1 is also spiral bevel diff. Interesting because have noted some confusion as original (NLA in NA) UN-1 lubricant (Castrol TAF-X) was listed as GL-5, and the Lotus recommended replacement is listed as 'GL-4+', which presumably is their own kind of made up spec indicating it exceeds GL-4 without a heck of a lot of phosphorus and/or sulfur. Anyway, thats what the Red Line tech representative indicated to me when I contacted him and he confirmed MT90.

I think I recall, once all disconnected as others stated, slide the diff back a bit (it can't go far!) and point the nose up and to the right side of the car and rotate the alloy casing end down and out on the left as stated. (Check for clearing brake lines and handbrake cables etc. so they don't snag depending where they lay.)
Note it weighs about 40 lb.
