It's amazing what passes for as 'rare' as well.

Yes, I think it is. I suspect the snipers will raise the price to ?1,300+ seconds before the auction closes.

Just to throw a bit in the mix,
I got hold of a 5 speed lotus gear box,in unknown condition for ?600. Sent it of for a rebuild at a cost of just shy of ?600.That was about 3 years ago.It had a bell housing and a bit of the clutch parts. So now I have spent ?1200 on the box and a further ?120 on a propshaft. The rest to fit it will probably come to another ?500.total ish, almost 2K.So is the A.V. conversion at 2k on the money?, too expensive? or are we paying too much for the parts for our cars?
Just a thought.

Paul,
I recently bought an Alan Voights 5 speed conversion for just a shade over what you paid, including the uprated 2.98 first gear ratio. I understand the Ford type 9 is a much better box than the Lotus/BL version and more ubiquitious, therefore better parts availability for the forseeable future.
The AV conversion plugs straight in with no modification issues if you follow the instructions it comes with. I guess it depends on how much originality is important, although vitually no Elans were ever fitted with the 5 speed box anyway. I could have spent marginally less and most of the summer acquiring, fitting and refining with no guarantee of sucess; I opted for the soft option and fitted my gearbox in a weekend. The best money I ever spent on the car without any shadow of doubt. Its clearly not for everyone but it seems to me a proven product that works well with good back-up if required from the guy who manufactures it.
Regards,
Bob
