Why dont you just fill the CV's with cream instead of the grease.....best of both worlds :lol: :lol:

Now there's a (worrying) thought! :D

Thankfully I can't seem to find my grease gun....maybe a can of compressed whipped ceam......hmmmm....

The Evante was a George Robertson design methinx, Vegantune of Spalding.

I think it was habit that made me install doughnuts last time they failed.

I think I SHOULD have thought it through and costed CV shafts.

You're probably right. It's been a long time since I even thought of the Evante, and I know I have catalogues from both CN and Vegantune from back in my early days. Don't think it changes my point though.

CN used to chop the tops off +2s

Vegantune did the Evante. They also did a total refurb on my car in 1982 and while visting, I remember George Robertson demonstrating that because their Fibreglass had carbon fibre in it, he could stand in the centre of a bonnet lid of an Evante on the floor, without damaging it. And he was/is no lightweight.

63 votes cast and the interesting point is that less than 1 in 5 of us are on the standard 2 Do-nut per side set up.

Back to my oil leaks now..........

The poll states 'what do you use or INTEND to use', and 63 peeps so far is hardly representative, is it. How many Elans and +2 on the road, worldwide? If the poll had just been for 'what have you got fitted' I think it would have been far more accurate. Just my pinion, & CW!

I have Performance Unlimited (modified with spring loaded floating centre shaft) with U/J's at each end and am a happy bunny

Leslie's point is valid. I voted based on my intention to change to CV driveshafts (at some undefined point in the future). My S3 is currently running donuts. If the question was worded differently, I'd have had to vote differently.

Hi

I love this topic!

Just what exactly is so great about originality? Move the discussion sideways a bit- does your pre-war house still have cast iron window frames or do you prefer to keep out the elements with plastic? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the bottom line for most firms all about money- if it does the job use it- but don't go overboard and fit something that outlasts the rest of the car. From what I've read Chapman wasn't even that interested in elans- except for the money they generated to enable him to do other things (nothing wriong with that as far as I'm concerned since I'm only interested in what these cars do rather than the details of how they do it).

What amuses me (apologies) is when I hear owners (of any marque I should add) monologue endlessly about how original their cars are. I seem to recall quite a few road testers of Chapman's output did sometimes remark about the low build standards in contemporary articles. Me- I prefer cars I don't have to nurse in heavy traffic because they overheat at the slightest hold up, that don't leak, that don't have ignition systems buried somewhere and all the rest of the nonsense.

Think about it this way if you're inclined to be a purist, the elan models changed throughout their production run so that the last ones has better design features (and some worse ones) so was a 73 sprint not quite the "same" as a 62 S1?

Ah, but you wouldn't be permitted to fit double glazing to a Grade 1 listed building would you? (and an Elan is certainly the equivalent of Grade 1 listing status :D ).

AH HA - But if it were a conversion and under Building Control you would have to meet the current building regulations by which ever means possible and with agreement with English Heritage i.e. by fitting secondary glazing.
So in the case of the Elan perhaps keep the original radiator but have another radiator somewhere else with an enormous fan :wink:
