An evaluation of 5 speeds for the Elan

Hi Matthew,

The original 13X 4 1/2 inch wheels were homologated at around 12.6 lbs (I forget the exact kg weight figure)

If you go to http://www.superlite-wheels.com/technical.html, they have tables for various aluminum wheel constructions and diferent sizes.

If you are staying at the standard size, you can get as light as 3.5kg, 7.7lbs.

But why bother. Try 14X6 at a still light 4.0kg, 8.8lbs. Or any other combination you want.

But be careful with the current Minilite wheels. They quoted me the 14X6 at 15lbs. It is my impression that the manufacturers just are not dealing with a 700kg or less Elan, vs 1,400kg sedan.

David,

I'm a little confused by your first post regarding the T9 based Voight conversion. Right after the paragraph on this conversion, you list numbers with an MT75 header. Are these number for the MT75 or T9 box?

Aren't there alternate ratios available for the T9 box?

Bill,

The ratios listed are those that come with the Alan Voight conversion, at least according to his brochure.

Different vehicles using the T9 had different ratios.

The 2.39 1st is one of the ratios available for the SPC (Quaife) gearbox, while the 2.66 1st is one of the ratios available for the BGH gearbox.

The different ratios for the Quaife gearbox are available at www.quaifeusa.com.

The different ratios available for the BGH conversion is available at http://www.bghgeartech.co.uk/html/5_speed.html.

If you want to evaluate all the different options available, request a copy of my spreadsheet. It will give you all the information you want (and probably more). This is not the easiest topic to understand, amd many people just live with what they have or are provided.
