Gearbox swop?

Alex

Are you going to do the gearbox?,I've done a couple (and still need to do the one in the car),they're not easy without the correct tools...

Hi all.

John, How are you? ... Good I hope...

The box is with Graham Boulton for its rebuild, which is underway I am told. I expect to have it mid - end Feb'.

I meanwhile am getting on with some of the bits n bobs that the conversion requires..

Hi guys.. Another two questions..

On the Sprint 4 speed box there are two spacers just under 1/2" thick which fit under the gearbox rubber mount. Between the mount and the mounting plate.

Question 1 is.... Do they still get fitted when using the 5 speed box. I will be modifying my 4 speed gearbox mounting plate and using it again with the 5 speed. Do I refit the spacers?

Question 2... What parts of the engine gets the Gray paint treatment? Just the block? Or what else? Its now cleaned (again!) and awaiting some new paint.

No spacers required. Lotus corrected that problem with the 5 speed casing.

Brill Brian... Many thanks mate.. Started to the sump yet?

I took the release bearing ass'y out this am to see what was needed. Simple job to fit the 5 speed bearing to the 4 speed bearing holder. I need to make a little sleeve about 2 mm thick. Then press it on as normal. Does anyone know if its OK to use the 4 speed release bearing holder with the 5 speed bearing? Looks good to me and I think the ass'y would just clip to the release arm / lever as norm' again. Can't see any reason why not. But.....???

I did it the other way around,the 4-speed bearing with the 4-speed bearing holder(needed boring out a little),kept the 4 speed pressure plate..

Which arm are you using?

That thought had occurred to me at the time I did mine but was strongly advised agaist it. I don't remember why.

OK. Will do. Sue Miller did not recommend either. And I am sure she was not just bumping up her sale value. She does give sound advice.

I am just trying to make sure I don't have to take it all apart again, I had ''motivation issues'' shall we say, and very nearly did not bother with it,but when I got started I just could not stop. I'm having to pace myself. Need to keep reminding myself that I have until the end of next March. No rush!! Aye right! If I had all the stuff I would be finished tomorrow night! :roll:

Anyone with an answer to my question 2 above? What parts of engine are painted with the grey?

Thanks again Brian.

I am going to redo the block only. The rest only need a wipe.. :wink:

One machine to fix tomorrow and with any luck I can get mucked into the car.. Making the pilot bearing holder and the sleeve for the release bearing. I am going to 'dry fit' the box to engine to check engagement input shaft into spigot. Then I will mount up the exhaust to get the pipes clearing the gearbox.

Sorry to hijack the thread guys,but is the info on this swap the same as doing it on a plus 2? I too am looking at a swap over the coming months. I have a rebuilt (by Bernie at CTS) lotus 5 sp to go in place of the 4

Any advice would be greatfully apreciated

As far as I know it's basically the same apart for the length of the propshaft...

P.S. What I am getting at is,was the Ford box imperial and the Lotus/Maxi box metric and if so how much difference is the play in the spigot/spigot bearing?

John,

The spigot diameter on the Ford 4 speed and the Lotus 5 speed is 15mm.

The INA standard bearing is designated as 21x15mm (nominal O/D & I/D)

Ford in Europe were not averse to using standard metric bearings in the dark pre 1970 imperial times.
