Does anyone recognise this part?

Hi
I’m overhauling my 4 speed gearbox. I found this detent plunger in the recess below the reverse idler gear. I don’t know where it came from. Not on the diagrams in the workshop manual as far as I can see. Can’t find a spring or hole for it to sit in.
Any ideas? It must go somewhere!
Thanks in advance
JonB

That's a"plunger" which goes in the front of the trans through the hole in the side of the main case. There should be 2 and a small pin that goes into the center shift rail. Its purpose is to prevent engagement of 2 gears at once. On Rd website "Selector Shaft Interlocking Plunger Set"

Ok. Found the second one in situ- phew - and fitted the first one between the centre selector rod and reverse. But there is nothing under that cap in the casing (arrowed in the earlier picture) and I don’t see the thin bit that’s in the photo. It may be part 30, a pin. There is a hole in the centre rid for it so I am guessing it goes through there?

Here's a YouTube video that shows the installation of the plungers (13.10 min) without removing the plug:

what is the diameter and length? That will determine its position too.

Great video, Blockhead, thanks. A shame he didn't do a full dismantle. I learned that you can't evaluate the condition of the baulk rings without doing this, so when he says it's OK I think he is guessing.. unless he ran it beforehand? In my case I have not driven the car, so I can't be sure about the box condition.
@Elan45, no need. One of the plungers was still in situ, therefore the loose one I was asking about came from the other position (the gap between the reverse and the centre selector rod).

i would strongly suggest you always replace all baulk rings as a matter of routine every time a gearbox is stripped regardless of how good or not they look. They are not that expensive.
Just not worth the risk of putting it all back together and then finding you have a crunchy gearchange.

I did say I was overhauling it, Alan. This means a clean out, seals, baulk rings, bearings, gaskets, bushes, even a new anti sizzle bush for the gearstick. Oh, and a nice coat of green paint to top it off.
Actually, I am nearly done with it. Waiting for parts.

John & Others,
Excuse me high jacking this topic, but you mentioned the anti sizzle bush. The manual mentions Loctite AV when reassembling the gear stick arrangement. What grade of Loctite are people using these days?
