No you cannot. Engine has to be removed to allow gearbox to come out.

Sorry to be the dissident here, but the box can be removed without the engine - I have done so more than once. It’s not easy, but it’s doable. Whether it’s the best way is subject to opinion

Mike,
That is the first I have heard of it. I thought I followed this forum closely, Thank you for the enlightenment. I have removed the engine and gearbox three times now although not for gearbox problems.

I have read a description of gearbox removal without removing the engine, but given the apparent difficulty (separate bell housing to engine, remove clutch and flywheel, separate bell housing from gearbox, remove gearbox) I question how much time is saved. To me, having pulled engines a few engines out of Elans over the years, it's much easier/faster to pull engine/gearbox out together. Though these days, with a two post lift, I just remove the body when I need to get the engine out.

Thanks Brian,
I was just looking for that.
I have read and I think, understood Mike`s description.
My thoughts are that is too difficult and there are too many points that have to be done correctly without easy access. I already have to do things twice as it is, without adding difficulties to the process. Also, I do not have a lift so I would be working on the floor.
But, never say it can`t be done.
Regards
Eric
wolfchen, good luck if you go for it and let us know how you go on.

Just to be clear, clutch and flywheel removal is not needed.
I have found, that in my car’s current configuration, the TTR manifold makes this procedure much more difficult - I probably would not do it this way. This is because the manifold makes removing the bell bolts almost impossible without removing the manifold. Anyone who has taken these on and off will tell you that it is no picnic.
With more a more traditional manifold , I didn’t find it to be all that difficult, car on jack stands, just me and a couple floor jacks did it in a few hours.
Like so many things, to each his own.

+1 engine out followrd by gearbox out.
For me to lift a gearbox back into place from below is far too heavy . A real gut buster or instant hernia lol
