Gearbox Input Shaft / spigot bearing

PostPost by: dlb123 » Wed Apr 12, 2023 7:20 pm

Hi there. I'm coming back to the elan after a long hiatus and had a question.

Currently reassembling the bell housing/clutch. I've noticed the gearbox Input Shaft wobbles a fair bit.

Am I right in assuming that this is normal? Given that the spigot bearing in the crank supports the nose of the shaft.

Also, when the crank was reground, I realised that the machine shop removed said spigot bearing.

The engine is now rebuilt, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to install a new one, give that I can't get a press on it.

Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions

Best.

The spigot bearing goes into the rear of the crank. Its usually an easy tap in. The wobble is normal as the spigot bearing in the crank limits movement.

You can tap new needle spigot bearing into crankshaft using a socket same as outside dia.

And remember to fit the spigot bearing the correct way round with the seal to the gearbox side.
