I've just finished refreshing the Gearbox on my Sprint.
On the Layshaft it had yellow paint and wondered why.
Could someone suggest why

I'm only guessing but it could be easy identification for production workers to determine
into which gearbox it gets installed, ie, wide, semi close, close.

Is it definitely semi-close ratios? I've just looked through some photos of semi-close gearboxes I've overhauled and I can only find one cluster with paint on and that is orange.

Before I went looking my first thought was that yellow may be for wide-ratio, although I'm not 100% sure on that...

As far as i know i'm the first to refresh the Box. Maybe i should get my marker out and count the turns in first Gear.
Is it one turn output and count input turns.
Sorry i'm a gearbox virgin.

Yes select first gear and turn input shaft three times to get one on the output with semi-close. Wide ratio is 3.5 turns of input shaft to 1 turn of the output in 1st.
I have to say the gears look to be semi-close looking at the size of the gears but photos can be deceptive!

Just counted in first and i have 3 turns. So happy it semi-close ratio.
Many thanks you had me worried. I think i'll just take a glass of cabernet sauvignon to celebrate.

Glad to know you've got the right gearset. I'll definitely be looking for paint marks on gears on the next gearboxes I strip!
