Fit of 4 speed release bearing on carrier

Just a quick question. The new bearing is a press fit on the bearing carrier shoulder. The shoulder is only about 3mm high and the rest of the release bearing brass inner just floats about on the carrier as a loose fit.

I am trying to get my head around this, as the brass inner rotates independently to the bearing outer casing and the part that fits on the shoulder, so you could fix the brass inner to the carrier and it would still work, and be a lot more secure? Or is the brass inner rotating freely part of the essential operation of the bearing in service?

In my experience that sounds normal with the bearing only a few millimetres onto the shoulder.

Yeah....seems a bit weird though.

Oh well, I'll put some bearing fit just on the shoulder to be sure it doesn't rotate, even though its going to take a light press to get it on.

Cheers
