Gearbox

The 5 speed gearbox in my elan +2 jumps out of 5th and is noisy in 3rd. Can anyone advice as to the practicality of overhauling myself i.e. availability of parts/special tools etc. Alternately can anyone recommend someone to carry out the overhaul or if a suitable gearbox is available

I have rebuilt the 5 speed in my plus 2 successfully myself, though it is a harder job than other gear boxes I have done. I borrowed a couple of special tools that a guy had made up locally based on the lotus special tool descriptions in the manual and these combined with a good hydraulic bearing puller kit certainly made it easier. The job is not possible with only basic hand tools.

The bearings are mainly RHP specials and not easy to come by. The best guide on doing the job I have seen in combination with the workshop manual is an article written by Victor Holinagel. It is on a Danish historic racing club web site. I forget the exact address but a yahoo or google search will throw up the article.

Hi,

The article by Victor Hollnagel can be found on <a href='http://www.hms.dk' target='_blank'>http://www.hms.dk</a> under Artikler.
This is the direct link to the pdf: <a href='http://www.hms.dk/artikler/Lotus_gear.pdf' target='_blank'>http://www.hms.dk/artikler/Lotus_gear.pdf</a>

My local bearing traders managed to supply a set of bearings for about ?200
the other bits had to come from an old maxi gearbox. luckily very low milage. But it all went together quite easyliy.30K miles later i am still happy. I have quite a lot of spare insides if you get stuck for bits. (bought another low milage maxi box when it came up)

It was my first gearbox rebuild and i found it quite easy, I made the special tools out of bits of bar I had arround.
