How easy should it be to turn the right-angle drive in the gearbox.

You won't be able to turn the inner cable drive by hand, if that's what you are asking. The inner drive gear on the speedo drive is in mesh with the output shaft of the gearbox, so if you try to turn the central shaft (where the cable inserts) you are trying to rotate the entire gearbox via that very small shaft. Not recommended.
But by putting the gearbox in gear and turning either the input or output shaft you should see it turn. Or just remove it to check it out. Will give you an opportunity to reseal it, as they are prone to leaks if not properly 0-ringed and gasketed.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself well, I meant turning the whole right-angle drive in the gearbox; should the clamp hold it very firmly to the box or should it pivot freely? cheers, John.

Just picked up a spare empty back axle ( Escort Mk2 ) am thinking of giving the back a little toe-in ( remember the Trapezoid ? ) , the problem being the half-shafts then not being at 90 degrees to the output gears??
Good old Colin used lots of rubber to allow movement , what was it he said " a pound of rubber is worth ?100 of engineering" , or something to that effect ?
