Gearbox oilseals

With the car now gone off to the paint shop, the gearbox sitting on my garage floor is the only item of the car not touched in the full restoration I?m doing. I have no idea of the condition of the box but will assume it?s OK (hopefully I won?t live to regret that decision). However, I thought it might be prudent to replace input and output oil seals. Had a quick look through the manuals and there was no mention of how to do these. I don?t want to get involved in a gearbox strip down so can anyone tell me if these seals would be easy to replace and if so what I need to do.

Neither require a strip down. The front seal is in the nose piece, the piece that bolts to the front of
the gearbox that the throwout bearing rides on. With the rear seal, which is at the end of the
tail housing, you have to deal with the output shaft coming out through it. You can prise the seal
out and tap a new one in.

Sometimes the seals are a bit of a PITA to remove, particularly the rear one, I have had success by taking a flat bladed screwdriver and grinding one side of the blade to a semi circle then tapping it down the outside of the seal to prise it out. Also be careful on the rear one as I have seen the outer circumference of the tailshaft break off if prised to hard.

Don?t forget to get a gasket set. There is a gasket between the nose piece and the main case. Youn will also want to take the top cover off for a quick inspection.

You have to take the nose piece (release brg support sleeve) off to replace the front seal.

There are two (2) different front seals, depending on the gearbox. Take a measurement of the outside of the original seal, and include that measurement when ordering the new seal.

Brian's top picture shows what you'll see. He has the seal removed in the picture but it'll be
self explanatory when you remove the nose piece.

There is also an 'O' ring on the speedo drive where it fits into the box.
