5-Speed gear lever notch

I was doing a bit of modification today to the gear lever in my Ford T9 gearbox in the Plus 2. The fork on the T9 seems exactly the same as the Lotus Maxi type 5-Speed.
There is a notch on the right side of the selector fork, see pic.
On my gear-lever, the main shaft of which is cranked to the rear, the notch is on the right-hand side.
However I have another gear-lever, which I got as a present, where either the gear lever is cranked forward or the notch is on the wrong side.
Has anyone any idea of the purpose of this notch, and will the gear-lever work if it is rotated 180 degs ?
